It is very easy for companies to pretty much forget about their website unless they are giving the address to a client, or somebody mentions it. Many businesses, especially those that are more service based, can go for months, or even years, without visiting their own website.

It happens all too easily. Things get busy, and the site becomes out of sight, out of mind. However, that situation can be dangerous online. While you may not be particularly thinking about your web presence, your competitors will likely be updating or upgrading their websites. This can potentially leave your site falling behind, in both search engine results and visitor accessibility.

Unfortunately, the world doesn't stand still, and neither does the Internet. For a start, Google keeps changing its algorithms. This can cause businesses who haven't checked their sites for months to be surprised that they have dropped off the first page.

Even if your website seems fine, it is often the case that advances in technology create issues.

As new devices emerged, several clients with older sites found that they did not reliably show up on tablets and smartphones. The solution was to upgrade their sites to our newest responsive style, which took care of those issues.

Software updates and new operating systems can be a roll of the dice and are harder to deal with. This year the newest versions of all the major browsers have caused concerns, from popup warnings of security concerns where there were none, to preventing pages and videos from loading. As a result, we have now initiated more intense cross-browser and cross-operating system testing as part of our production process.

Ideally, a company should check their website as often as possible, on as many devices as possible.  It is dangerous to assume that if a visitor has issues, they will contact you. Most casual visitors will simply move on to the next site on the list.

You should also run searches for what you do at least every three months to see where you show up.

A few places dropped in search results are easier to rectify than a few pages.

If you have concerns with your web site performance, the wind-up to the new year is a great time to look into our WebUpdate system sites. Unlike WordPress and other free open source sites, WebUpdate offers advanced SEO, security, social and responsive features. Give your business the best competitive edge online.
